I thought it would be cool if we have someplace to keep track of great sources for information on different creatures that we find. Be it a book or website, feel free to share!

Yeah Brandi, you turned us on to those superb Yokai and Yurei books.

I’d add Dungeons and Dragons books:

    • Monster Manuals (from any/all editions, but the 5th looks particularly good.)
    • Original Fiend Folio is pretty great
    • A Practical Guide to Monsters, Mirrorstone books (essentially YA D&D sourcebooks)

Just wanted to add a few:

The Night Parade of One Hundred Demons: a Field Guide to Japanese Yokai by Matthew Meyer

The Hour of Meeting Evil Spirits: an Encyclopedia of Mononoke and Magic by Matthew Meyer

The Vampire of Europe by Montague Summers

Atlas of Cursed Places: A Travel Guide to Dangerous and Frightful Destinations by Olivier Le Carrer

I prefer to look at folklore and mythology books for monster references. I guess it feels more accurate if it’s talking about the culture that birthed the creature, but that’s just how it is for me personally.

Here’s one of my favorite resources on the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus –
